gotta watch those pre-conceptions!

today my preconceived ideas about particular folks nearly bit me! Here's what happened:
I'm a librarian, working in a large city library system. I work in the children's department, facing the new books and some computers. I looked up from reading about the recent OPAL event where Michael Stevens spoke about the top ten emerging technologies for libraries to see:
a well-dressed young member of the latter-day saints (on his mission year by his dress and name tag) looking through Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus Trilogy Book 2: the Golem's Eye.
Now, I confess, I assumed he would be offended by this book, talking as it does about magic and demons. My first urge was, shamefully, that of the censor. I then wondered what he would make of the book, once I realized what it was I had contemplated doing.

(bad librarian, don't take books away from anyone!)

I continued to sit there, thinking about how to handle a potential complaint about the book, and remembered that I once had a LDS friend enjoyed Science Fiction. We'll wait and see if anything happens, I thought. To my delight he stood and read the book for a bit, then simply put it aside and looked for something else to read. Just goes to show you that not everyone will live up to your preconceived notions about the worst in folks. (bad librarian, let them decide for themselves!)
